What do I do as a parent to support my child with Maths?
Any child who are taking Mathematics at the Empangeni High School are welcome to download and follow the revision rosters for the different grades. These are made available as a service to the community.
Here are some recommendations to parents by Mariaan Viljoen, Winner of SA National Teacher Award in the Western Cape Province for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (2014):
If your child achieved less than 50% for Maths in grade 9 [Nina adds, for any other grade], and decided to take Maths Core in grade 10 [Nina adds, for any grade higher than grade 9], he/she will have to work hard at Maths. The following recommendations are prescribed:
- Please encourage you child to do his/her maths homework every day.
- Make sure that your child does an extra half hour of Maths exercises every day, over and above the Maths homework.
- With the Pandemic restrictions for schooling, I, Nina, suggests at least one hour of Maths every day, including the days at home, plus the recommended halfhour of Maths, bringing the days at home to one and a half hours of Maths. It sounds like a lot, but is achievable in a well-planned day.
- Send you child to Maths extra classes at school, if possible.
According to Mariaan:
In the senior phase, new concepts are presented in class every day, and must be practised at home. The grade 10 curriculum is completely different from the grade 9 curriculum.
Believe in your child and give him/her your support.
A TESTIMONY from a mom who implemented this advice:
Nina, thank you for all your effort, motivation and patience that has gone into the extra maths classes!
The first few months was a definite struggle but the persistence paid off and 5 months later his grades has improved from 48% to 66%.
I am confident that we will see a further improvement as the term continues.

Kinders wat Wiskunde neem by Empangeni Hoërskool is almal welkom om die hersieningsroosters af te laai vir die verskillende grade. Hierdie diens word aan die gemeenskap gelewer.
Hierdie aanbevelings aan ouers word gedoen deur Mariaan Viljoen, wenner van die Nasionale Onderwys Toekenning in die Wes-Kaap, vir Uitnemendheid in Wiskunde Onderwys (2014).
Volgens Mariaan:
Indien jou kind minder as 50% vir Wiskunde in graad 9 behaal het, en besluit het om in graad 10 Wiskunde te neem, sal hy/sy baie gedetermineerd moet werk aan Wiskunde. Die volgende aanbevelings word gedoen:
- Moedig jou kind aan om elke dag sy huiswerk te doen.
- Maak seker dat jou kind daagliks vir ten minste ‘n halfuur lank ekstra Wiskunde oefeninge doen, bo en behalwe die Wiskunde huiswerk.
- Met die huidige pandemie behoort die kinders steeds elke dag, insluitend die dae by die huis, ten minste een uur an Wiskunde te spandeer. Dan moet die aanbevole halfuur bygebring word, sodat die dae by die huis ten minste een en ‘n half uur aan Wiskunde spaneer moet word. Dit is ‘n mondvol, maar is moontlik indien dagbeplanning gedoen en uitgevoer word.
- Stuur jou kind na die ekstra Wiskunde klasse by die skool, indien moontlik.
In die senior Wiskunde fase word daar daagliks nuwe begrippe behandel wat elke middag ingeoefen moet word. Dit verskil radikaal van die graad 9-Wiskundekurrikulum.

Die eerste paar maande was ‘n geweldige stryd, maar die deursettingsvermoë het betaal en 5 maande later is sy punte op vanaf 48% na 66%.
Ek is vol vertroue dat ons verdere verbetering sal sien met verloop van tyd.
